Armor For Sleep reunites…sort of!

23 May

Over the weekend the annual Bamboozle Fest took place in New Jersey. Being as that I live in Michigan, I didn’t attend. The line up this year sounded pretty awesome with acts such as Skrillex, Incubus, We Came As Romans, The Story So Far, Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance, All-American Rejects, Jimmy Eat World, Anti Flag, Bon jovi, Gaslight Anthem, Brand New, Bayside, Buckcherry, Motion City Soundtrack, and so many more I can’t find the time to list them all.

For the last month or so all I’ve been reading online is about the revealing of the bands that will play during the three day festival. There are plenty of acts that interest me but seeing as I live so far away, nothing really got me excited. This is until it was announced that Armor For Sleep would be doing a reunion performance. That was something that not only caught my attention but it got me excited.

Armor For Sleep is one of those bands I really got into when I was around 14, stayed a fan of for years and years, then suddenly one day I hear that they broke up. I say one of those because there’s currently a list of bands that I liked a lot when I was younger and then they broke up. Though it’s probably pointless to wish that Armor For Sleep as well as the rest of the bands on my list to get back together and put out new material, I’m still holding out hope that one day it will happen.

Ben, the singer of Armor For Sleep, recently did an interview saying that the Bamboozle reunion was a one time thing and that the band would not going to put out another album. They might not put out another album but I think there’s something going on with them, maybe an eventual tour. I say this because Armor For Sleep made an announcement on their facebook page that they will be playing a show at Irving Plaza in July. It seems a little fishy to me that if Bamboozle was supposed to be a one time reunion and now they’re playing another show in July. I personally would love to see a full US tour with Armor For Sleep. I think other AFS fans would like that as well.

And with that, I leave with a AFS music video.

Rappers That I Like: MC Lars

21 May

Years ago, of my favorite bands, The Matches, did a collaborative song with MC Lars. That’s how I discovered him and up until last year, I didn’t know anything about other than the fact he did a song with The Matches and that he was probably from California.. and that second one was a far stretched guess. (((The Matches will have their own post in the near future. When I post it, there will be a link rightttttttttt here.)))

MC Lars (and Weerd Science in the background) performing at Warped Tour last summer

Last year, I made plans to go to Warped Tour, an annual music festival that travels across North America (US and Canada) during the summer. Before I made any solid decision to attend, I wanted to take a good look at the list of bands that were playing the festival. Let’s face it, if there aren’t musical acts that you love and enjoy seeing at an all day, outdoors music festival, there’s really no much point in going… If you wanted to see a bunch of yahoos you’ve never heard of, you could go down to a local bar and save $60 (on gas, ticket, parking, and whatever else you’d spend money on during the day).

There were quite a few bands that I loved and have seen before as well as ones I liked but had never had the chance to see on the roaster. When looking at the line up, I saw Lars’ name and instantly thought of the song he did with The Matches. I knew straight away that I wanted to see what he’d be like live. What witty raps would he bring to the table, or rather stage? Being the strange person I am, I didn’t go and look up any of his music before attending Warped.

I like to do that occasionally when I go to shows. It’s a hit or miss sort of thing. Most of the time, my instinct tells me that it’s a good thing and that the band or artist won’t disappoint and usually, my instinct is right. I’ve had countless good times just going to shows with little info about an artist and with those kind of odds who’s to say I’m not onto something?

When the day for Warped actually came around, it was a bright, sunny day down in Detroit and hundreds, maybe thousands; of other sweaty music patrons were there ready for a good time. I think it was like around 2 or 3 in the afternoon when MC Lars and a fellow independent rapper, by the name of Weerd Science, took the stage to prove that once again, my instincts were right.

I can honestly say, that MC Lars and Weerd Science were on of the best performances I saw that day. They both took the stage with a lot of energy and proceeded to spit well-planned and witty raps for the crowd’s listening and viewing pleasures. It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced on account of the fact I’m not big into rap or hip hop music and before that day, I have never wanted to go to see an rapper perform; I had no interest for such.

To me, the common and over-popularized rap music, you know the stuff that gets radio-play and just about everyone and their brother knows, is so generic. It all sounds vaguely similar and there’s not much content to it. The lyrics, seemingly, show traces of vulgarity, making great deals of money and the appraisal of violence, sex, and drug use. I don’t live a lifestyle like that and I certainly don’t want to listen to music that promotes that.

That was how I saw rap music before Lars. He writes about slightly more important things like politics, social issues, and problems with the current pop culture and he does it in an intelligent and cunning way. He kind of takes something serious and adds a bit of a comedic twist to it, so when you listen you kind of say to yourself, “Oh, ahhhaha I see what you did there.” His music is more about wittiness and facetiousness than big pimpin’ and his music is meant to be more than background music.

I may not be able to identify with all of his music but I can certainly respect it. After that day at Warped, I went home to look up what could about MC Lars. I was shocked to find out that he was very DIY (do-it-yourself) with his music, meaning he puts out his own records and LPs and rather than being on a major music label he started his own label, Horris Records, to put out music. He’s a pasty, white dude from the suburbs of the San Francisco area (I was right about him being from Cali) that has a passion for rap music. What I found out about Lars from his website, which is linked at the beginning of this post, was all interesting to me. The things I learned form his website bio really tells a lot more about his music…how he got into rap and where his influences came from, it really says a lot about his musical style.

…And if you couldn’t tell from my banner and now from this post, I’ll say it outright, I like MC Lars’ style.

Songs That I Like: Walking on Broken Glass

14 May

I work at Meijer and Walking on Broken Glass happens to be one of the songs I hear on an almost daily basis because it plays on the sound system. In my opinion, a great deal of the songs that we’re forced to listen to while working are dreadful. This song, is one of the few that I like.

Annie Lennox is best known for being in The Eurythmics and singing their song “Sweet Dreams” and to be honest, before working at Meijer I was unaware that The Eurythmics had more songs than “Sweet Dreams” let alone that Annie had a solo career. So if anyone reading this is saying to themselves that they didn’t know she had a solo career, don’t feel bad at all.

The song is essentially about being vulnerable after a break up. Who hasn’t been there before? When listening to this song’s up beat tempo and catchy melodies, it makes the lyrics seem less depressing and hurt. You really have to listen to the words and let them sink in to take in the deeper meaning of the song. The chorus, in it’s own, it just saying “Walking on broken glass” over and over. The melody of it gets in your head “Walking on, walking on broken glass” and when you actually think about what walking on broken glass entails, it’s painful and the imagery that goes along with it it enough to make you want to say “ouch”.

I don’t know quite what draws me to this song. I just like it. I decided to attach the music video straight from Youtube rather than uploading the audio becuse the video is amusing. Also, Hugh Laurie and John Malkovich have appearances in the video.

Bands That I Like: Bayside

14 May

This is a group photo of the band that I took directly off from their website, http://www.baysidebayside.com

I was around 13 or 14 when I first heard the name Bayside thrown around. I was curious about the band so I looked them up on MySpace because that was a happening place to discover music, at the time. My  was surprised the first time I listened to a Bayside song, truly surprised. The music in it’s own right is up beat and raw; Not in a heavy metal way, it’s more of an alternative-punk sound. Then the singer, Anthony, has this unique and unexpected kind of  smooth, jazzy tone in his voice. It’s hard to explain to someone who’s never heard them.

The raw alternative sound combined with at times a smooth voice is . Lyrically, the typical themes of almost all Bayside’s songs are struggle and over coming struggle. Easily, two things to which that a lot of people, myself included, can relate. The band write about other things but that’s what the generalization seems to be.

One of my favorite lyrics comes from a song off from Bayside’s most recent album, Killing Time. The song is called “On Love, On Life” and essentially, what I take out of the song as a whole is that at end of the day if being yourself isn’t enough to make a relationship work then you’re better off to move on alone. My favorite lyrics are as followed:

When mystery fades
We identify the problems
But, they may not be problems after all

Shock and dismay, they affect what we say
We should bite our tongues, we should bite our tongues
‘Cause after all, it’s only our lives anyway…

And I can’t let it bother me
If fact and fate just can’t agree on love, on life
Can’t we stop taking ourselves too seriously?

The lyrics are, how I take it, a little cynical, “after all, it’s only our lives anyway”, as if it’s not a big deal or something. When I listen to that song, I just feel a great sense of stress-release. For me, the song kind of serves as a reminder to not get wrapped up in trying to undo the past and to accept it and move on…just to let it go.

This is a crappy picture I took at one of my many Bayside concert experiences.

Over the years, I’ve had the privileged of attending numerous Bayside shows. I’ve even briefly met the bassist in Pontiac last year after a show. I have never had a bad Bayside concert experience. I’ve met a lot of great people at Bayside shows that understand why I like this band so much. They get it because they also have that love and devotion. Actually, speaking of devotion, the band also refers to themselves and their fans as a cult. It sounds weird but if you look up the dictionary definition of what a cult is, it describes Bayside, their fans, and the shows. There’s no religion involved but there are gatherings (the shows), people showing and exclaiming devotion towards something (concert go-ers), and shared ideals.

The reason why I chose to write a music blog is because of my love for music and the community the is created around music.

Just want to make a fake post real quick to see the level of difficulty of this site.

This is just a sample picture I took inside Comerica

This is just a picture for post-practicing purposes only. It is my original photo… which explains why it is not very good.
